First Case of HMPV Detected in Mumbai : Baby Infected with Virus at Powai Hospital

First Case of HMPV Found in Mumbai : On January 8, the first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) was found in Mumbai. A six-month-old baby at Hiranandani Hospital in Powai tested positive for the virus. The baby had a trouble in breathing and also has a low oxygen level. She was admitted to the hospital on January 1.

Doctors said that there is no special treatment for this virus. The baby is being treated with medicine to help breathing in the ICU.

The hospital told local authorities about the case on January 1. However, health officials from the BMC in Parel said they had not received any report about it.

HMVP Precautions Taken by the Government : 

There is an outbreak of HMPV in China. Because of this, the Indian government is taking steps to prevent the virus from spreading. Some cases of HMPV were found during routine testing in India. The Health Ministry has set up a team to watch the situation in China and get updates from the World Health Organization.

About HMPV :

HMPV is a virus that was first found by Dutch scientists in 2001. It causes problems in the lungs and breathing. The virus spreads when someone coughs or sneezes. It usually appears during winter and spring. The virus can spread for 3 to 5 days after someone gets infected.

Symptoms of HMPV :

HMPV symptoms are like those of a cold or COVID-19. People get a cough, fever, and cold. The number of HMPV cases has increased in China over the last five years.
