Pune, Pimpri : The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a strong warning to food sellers and manufacturers. The Food and Drug Administration(FDA) have stated that anyone who wants to run the food business they need to take valid license. If someone is running food business without a valid license or registration, he/she will be fined up to ₹2 lakh and a prison sentence of up to six months. License or Registration need to take under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules for license and registration :

As per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules, sellers and manufacturers either need to take license or register their business. Food businesses with an annual turnover is greater than ₹12 lakh must get a license. And those with a turnover under ₹12 lakh must register. In Pune district, 25,960 businesses have received licenses, and 1,27,078 have registered this year.

Getting a food license or registration is very easy and also it is not expensive . Businesses with a turnover under ₹12 lakh can register for just ₹100. Vendors whose annual turnover more than ₹12 lakh need pay ₹2,000 for a license. Manufacturers need pay between ₹3,000 and ₹5,000 for the license.

Operating a food business without registration or a license is illegal. Those who break the law are punished under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Shops that sell poor-quality or expired food may face penalties. It might be possible the shop will be shut down permanently. The penalty for running a business without a license can be a fine of up to ₹2 lakh and up to six months in jail.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) : Where to get license or How to register?

Food sellers and manufacturers can apply for a license or registration on the FSSAI’s official website at fssai.gov.in. Consumers are advised to check the “Best Before” date on packaged food before buying. If the date is missing, complaints can be made to the FDA.

FDA officials say they regularly inspect shops. Vendors selling bad or fake food products will face strict punishment. Businesses selling expired food could be fined or even shut down in serious cases.
