Pune: A Shift Towards Simpler Weddings with More Court Marriages

The Pune, a city which famous for its grand wedding celebrations. However more and more couples are looking for simpler and more affordable alternatives. In 2024, over 5,500 couples chose court marriage. This is a clear sign of “a growing preference for easy and cost-effective marriages”.

While traditional weddings with elaborate decorations, delicious food, and many rituals are still popular. However now younger couples are preferring a court marriages under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. Court marriage process is completely online, making it a practical and affordable choice.

Court Marriage Registration Numbers on the Rise

Pune sees around 250–300 court marriages every month, adding up to about 5,500 registrations in a year. This is a rise from last year’s total of 4,000 registrations. Marriage Officer Sangita Jadhav said that the increase is due to more people becoming aware of the simple and cost-efficient process.

Streamlined and Transparent Process

The government has made the process more transparent. The government has added QR codes to marriage certificates. Because of QR codes it become very easy to digital access marriage certificates. From the registration to getting the certificate, this whole process is cashless. No need of middlemen which reduces the cost.

Jadhav also mentioned that court marriages are open to people from all religions and communities. The process starts with an online application form submission. After that document verification is done within four days. A one-month notice period is mandatory before couples can pick a date for their registration.

Eligibility and Documents

To be eligible, the bride must be at least 18 years old, and the groom must be 21. All the forms and guidelines needed for the process are available on the government’s website, making it easier for couples to apply.
