Pune: Sahyadri Hospitals Performs City's First Robotic Assisted Surgery For Hip Replacement
Pune : Sahyadri Hospitals recently carried out the city’s first Robotic Assisted Surgery for hip replacement. Surgery is done using a special method called the direct anterior approach. The surgery was performed on a 65-year-old retired man from Satara. He was suffering a condition called Avascular Necrosis (AVN) of the hip. Where there is not enough blood flow to the bone, AVN occurs. Because of less blood flow, bones gets to weaken and then break down.
The surgery performed with the help of Dr. Abhijit Agashe. He is an expert orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon at Sahyadri Hospitals. Surgery was done on November 27, 2024. Now, the patient recovered very well and was able to move better. He was discharged on December 2, 2024.

Dr. Abhijit Agashe explained the benefits of this new surgery method. He said, “The robotic-assisted approach is more accurate and less invasive than regular hip surgery. This means less pain, quicker recovery, and easier movement after the surgery.
With this surgery patients can even sit cross-legged as well. Which is very important for many people’s daily activities and cultural practices, especially those with hip problems.
This method has improved how patients recover and move right after surgery. Patients quality of life improved, especially for those with AVN Hip.
Dr. Agashe added, “Using the robotic system with the direct anterior approach is a big step forward in joint replacement surgery. By entering pre-surgery data into the robotic system, we can create a surgery plan that is customized for each patient. This ensures that the alignment and leg length are perfect, with precision down to the millimeter.
