Thousands of Fish Dead in Mula Mutha River, Pune: Water Sample Test Results Awaited
Pune: Thousands of dead fish were found in the Mula-Mutha River near the Naik Bet (island) area. The people are suspecting it is happened because of chemical pollution in the water. The residents are raising the concerns about both pollution and public health. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started an investigation to find out where the contamination came from.
Mula Mutha River :
The Mula and Mutha Rivers, which meet at Sangamwadi. Both rivers have been polluted for a long time due to untreated sewage and waste from factories. Pune produces around 900 million liters of sewage every day, but only half of it is treated. The rest flows into the rivers without treatment, making the water quality much worse.
The Mula River also gets untreated industrial wastewater from factories in the PCMC area. The toxic chemicals being released into the river have made the water unsafe for fish and other aquatic life.
People living near Naik Bet have seen large numbers of dead fish in the river. They reported that strong bad smell was coming from the river. This has brought attention to the nearby Naidu Sewage Treatment Plant run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). However, an initial check found no signs of untreated water being released from the plant. The Sewerage Department has been asked to look for any leaks or damage in the sewage pipes.
PMC officials took water samples from the river to test in a lab. Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. said, “They have taken the water samples, which have sent for analysis. Analysis will help to find out what caused the fish deaths. The results will be ready in two to three days. Based on the findings, we will take the necessary steps.”
