Speed Breakers - The Pune City

Pune : Good news for Punekars! The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to remove all speed breakers from the city’s roads. PMC said that the decision will improve traffic flow inside the city. Also many people raised concerns about unnecessary speed breakers. Recently PMC has done the survey about city’s road. As per the survey, 667 speed breakers did not meet safety standards set by the Indian Road Congress (IRC). About 250 of these speed breakers have already been removed, and the rest will also removed soon.

Speed Breakers : PMC Survey

Pune has about almost 2,000 kilometers of roads. Earlier many speed breakers were built based on local residents and local leaders request. Reason was to slow down over speeding and to avoid accidents. However, many of these speed breakers were not made according to IRC’s safety rules. Current speed breakers are not in proper dimensions such as height, width and length.

The PMC’s Road Department says that speed bumps are causing traffic jams. There are many traffic jams are happening at many places, especially during busy hours. A recent study found that cars move as slow as 10 to 12 kmph in rush hours, and extra speed bumps make it worse.

PMC don’t have clear information about Speed breakers, and has made the problem worse. Earlier the city used to have 1,400 kilometers of roads. But now new 34 villages are part of the Pune, and the road network has grown by 500 to 600 kilometers. The PMC is doing a survey to find out the exact number of speed breakers, potholes, and other problems. So they can improve these problems properly.

The PMC Senior officials have said that, speed breakers will only be put in the places where they are really needed. In the future, the traffic police and the Municipal Corporation will work together and they will decide where to build speed breakers. That way the unnecessary speed breakers will avoided.
