How a Retired Bank Officer Was Scammed of Rs 33 Lakh Through a Facebook Credit Card Link

Retired Bank Officer From Pune Loses Rs 33 Lakh To Cyber Scam

A 61-year-old retired assistant became a victim of a online scam. She earlier used to work in public sector bank. The woman, who lives in Shivdarshan area of Pune, clicked the link which sent by the scammer. The scammer looted Rs 33 lakh from her bank account.

How this scam happened ?

On Dec 8, the scammer called her and pretended that he is the employee of bank which the woman was working earlier. Then scammer convinced her to apply for credit card and then he sent a link on her Facebook page.

The woman clicked on the link and downloaded the Android Package Kit(APK) file. Caller asked her to fill her baking details when installing the app. She filled the details and granted the permission on her mobile.

On the next day Dec 9, scammer looted INR 33 lakh from woman’s three bank accounts. He used phone banking service to transfer the money. The woman realized the scam when she received message saying “5 lakh debited from her account”. She reached a nearest police station, Parvati and filled the complaint.

Police investigation :

The police have filed a case under the appropriate sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The investigating officer said that “they have asked respective banks to provide all transaction details of woman’s bank account”. Also police said that people needs to be more careful and cautious while doing the bank related work online.

This incident shows the increasing risk of cybercrime, particularly for older people. It is reminder to us to be careful when clicking on links or sharing personal information online.
