L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan Sparks Debate with 90-Hour Work Week Comments

L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan, made some comments that upset many people online. He said that employees should work 90 hours a week and even give up Sundays. He also asked, “How long can you stare at your wife?” and suggested people spend less time at home and more time at work.

These comments started a debate about work-life balance. Some people agreed, but many others did not. Subrahmanyan’s words reminded people of what Infosys Co-Founder Narayana Murthy said before about working 70 hours a week.

What Exactly “L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan” Said :

In the video, Subrahmanyan said, “I wish I could make you work on Sundays. If I could, I would be happy, because I work on Sundays.” He also asked, “What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? Come on, get to work.”

Many people on social media were upset. L&T later explained that the chairman was just talking about working hard to help the country. They said he was focused on helping build the nation and that L&T has been helping with infrastructure and industries for over 80 years.

Subrahmanyan also shared a story about talking to a person from China. He said that people in China work 90 hours a week, while in the U.S., people work only 50 hours. He encouraged L&T employees to work the same way to succeed.

The video quickly went viral. Some people thought Subrahmanyan’s comments were too harsh. Especially since CEOs have different pressures than regular workers.

This sparked more discussion on work-life balance. Earlier this year, Infosys Co-Founder Narayana Murthy also talked about a 70-hour workweek. He said that India’s work productivity is low and asked young people to work longer hours.

Last month, businessman Gautam Adani also joined the conversation. He said work-life balance should be a personal choice, and it shouldn’t be forced on others.
